Forum Review: Wanted for the iPhone

Wanted by msbaylor. (Visit the thread for video and more pics. For more Forum Reviews, see the TiPb iPhone App Store Forum!

Wanted is a simple picture editing application that turns a picture of a person into a wanted poster. The poster can then be printed out onto a piece of paper for the office. Don’t worry the output file is much larger than a normal iPhone picture.

The app begins with a menu and “wild-west” type music. You have the option to turn the music on and off as you wish. I found listening to the music relevant to the app, but turned it off after awhile.

In the menu you can select whether you want to use the camera to take a picture or if you want pick a picture from the camera roll. Here I picked a random image from Google…

The next screen you’ll see will have places to edit the title, in other words it doesn’t have to say “Wanted” also you can edit the reward, the status and the name in the poster. You can also edit the picture by tapping on the items next to the picture you have picked/taken.

You can then add pieces to the picture such as a hat, a revolver, a mustache, and/or a sheriff’s badge by tapping on it, it places is it on the picture. You can resize the objects by using two fingers to rotate and resize the objects. I noticed that after placing one object, then placing another that the 2nd objects was not automatically selected and threw my previous placement off until I realized I needed to select the second object, I also found that one of the hats, that has a curve to it on the bottom of it.

The below photo is the final picture. You can click on it to see the actual resolution of the photo itself. The developer claims that it is a printable photo, however, I have yet to do this, but when I do, I will say so below.

Overall this is an intresting app and I can see a fit for this app. I would like to see more objects added or more so more options of each object. While I like the final photo, I am not sure I quite like the wood background behind the “poster” within the final pic. I would like to see a default selection tool when placing the objects in the photo also a list of ideas for what to put in the title to make different posters. I really like the large file it exports to (noted above). Overall for the price tag of $0.99, this is a functional app for whatever purpose you plan on using it for…

Pros:

  • Large resolution final pic
  • Intresting Concept
  • Music goes good with the teme of the app (a new one for costuming)

Cons:

  • Sometimes placement of objects is hard
  • “wood” behind the “poster” I feel, shouldn’t be there.
  • Only a few objects available

craigsphone - A Free Craigslist iPhone App

January 5, 2009 by editor · Leave a Comment

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

craigsphoneI’ve looked into a craigs list app for the iPhone before but the only one I could find cost $2.99. Gizmodo wrote about craigsphone today so I thought I’d check it out. The first thing that bugs me about this app is that you can’t view listings by their category in the for sale section. It’s all mixed together. You also have to be careful when you’re looking at an item and want to go back, you have to wait for the for sale button to load. Otherwise, if you do it too fast, the browse button is still there and it takes you all the way back to the first login screen.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of good features to this app. First that it’s free, then the sweet icon. There’s lots of other categories than just “for sale” like housing , jobs, resumes, etc. You can create a new post right from your iPhone. It looks like they’re working on a nearby feature but there’s a warning that says, “Nearby features currently work only in the SF Bay Area and Manhattan.” And finally, something to remember. If you’re going to create a post on your iPhone you have to upload the images first under the account tab.

For a free app it works to get the job done. If they clean up a few things this will be an amazing app that most craigslist addicts will love!

Macworld Expo 2009 Has Begun

January 5, 2009 by editor · Leave a Comment

Macworld Expo 2009 has begun.  The yearly party of all-things-Apple will move into full swing with tomorrow’s 9am (Pacific) keynote presentation, to be delivered by Apple Senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller.  Macworld Expo 2009 takes place at San Francisco’s Moscone Center and runs from January 5th - 9th.

Both Arnold and Blake of Touch Arcade are on location in San Francisco and will be attending tomorrow’s keynote as well as providing iPhone related news and information from the expo floor all week long.

We expect there to be many iPhone-related announcements and demos throughout the week and we will strive to bring those to readers in as timely a fashion as is possible.  And as we mentioned in an earlier post, we’d love to meet up with any developers or readers who will also be attending.  (Rather than try to coordinate individual meetings, the easiest time to meet up will be at the MacRumors and iPhone Alley party which we will both be attending.)

Follow Blake and Arnold on Twitter for brief updates on what we’re up to during the week and keep an eye on Blake’s MWSF ‘09 Flickr set for any and all floor pics taken during the expo (updated daily).

For a live play-by-play of tomorrow’s keynote event, complete with photos, visit MacRumorsLive at 9am (Pacific).

L’iPhone conquista il mercato

December 31, 2008 by editor · Leave a Comment

Doodles - Drawing Application

December 29, 2008 by editor · Leave a Comment

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Doodles Doodles is a simple drawing application that is available in Cydia via the iSpazio source. When you first open the application you will get a white page with a lower menu bar…this is actually the main drawing page of the application. The options on the lower menu bar are (left to right); Save, Background Options, Line Options, Symmetry Options and Erase.

The Background option allows you to choose a background for your drawing. You can choose a solid color, a photo out of your Photo Albums or you can take a picture. The only issue I have with this option is that once you have selected a background, there is no way to delete it. You can change the background if you have chosen a color background but you cannot erase the background and if you set a photo as the background or taken a photo for the background you can neither change it nor erase it. You have to close the application and reopen it to start over.

The Line option allows you to choose the size of your brush as well as the color you would like to draw with. This can be changed as many times as you would like in one doodle.

The Symmetry option is pretty cool. It allows you to draw over an axis giving you the option of a vertical axis, horizontal axis or both. To use this feature, you will need to turn it on, select an axis and then select Close. Now when you draw, you will be a mirror image of it based on which axis you chose. You can really do some cool things this option and can also be changed as many times as you would like in one doodle.

The Trash option will delete your drawing. You do not get a warning with this one and it deletes ALL of your drawing not just the last mark. So, make sure you want to erase your entire drawing before you select the trash option. However, it does not erase your background, just what you have drawn. It would be nice it there was a pop-up making sure you wanted to delete your drawing (I have accidentally deleted two drawings already!). I would also love to see a few options such as; letting you undo one mark at a time, an erase all option, an erase background only option….etc.

Now, the Save option. I personally cannot get this option to work. It says that is has saved my doodle to the Photo Library but, it doesn’t show up anywhere in my Photo Albums. So, you will have to take screenshots for now!

Update: Your doodles are indeed saved to your Camera Roll you just cannot see them on your iPhone. However, you can see them when you connect your iPhone to your computer so, you can get them off your iPhone that way.

Once you have chosen all the options you would like, you can just touch the screen to draw.

Overall, this is a very simple application that is most definitely still in its first stages but, I’m excited to see what the updates bring.

7 Reasons Why an iPhone Nano is a Great Idea

December 28, 2008 by editor · Leave a Comment

I was reading through Digg today and noticed this article. . .7 Reasons Why the iPhone nano Is a Bad Idea. Call me crazy, but this list just seems like a collection of potentially true opinions, nothing more. When an article like this to hit the front page of Digg, it just makes me think. Then again, just look at who submitted it DrOZMAC. 90% of his submissions are from MacBlogz.com(or at least the majority are) so I guess a few have to hit the front page eventually.

So let me break this list down 1 by 1 and tell you why an iPhone Nano is not only a great idea. . .but also, why it would sell well.

1 - App Store - This article says that if Apple released an iPhone Nano then they wouldn’t allow the App Store on it.
This is completely bogus. The best part of the App Store is that most of the applications work on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Yes there are some that use GPS and require the iPhone 3G. . .but for the most part, it’s all compatible.

2 - Virtual Keyboard - This article says that the virtual keyboard for the iPhone Nano would have to be smaller.
The virtual keyboard for the iPhone Nano wouldn’t have to be smaller. It might need to be re-designed, but that’s it. The iPhone Nano would have the same width as the regular iPhone(as least by the concept art), it just has a smaller height. Open the Notes application and notice the extra space above the keyboard, and below the text that’s actually being typed. There is room to fit the keyboard.

3 - The Tininess - The article says the iPhone Nano would sell well in Japan(they like tiny gadgets).
The size of the iPhone has always been an issue. Yes some people would like a bigger screen for playing games, but not everyone plays games on their iPhone. Look what Apple did with the 1st revision of the iPhone(they made it smaller). . .and the same can be said with the iPod Touch. The icons that appear on the home screen are scaled down, so why wouldn’t they do it with the iPhone Nano too(with all other images).

4 - Stripped Features - This article says the iPhone Nano would have to be stripped down.
Yet another bogus prediction that has no merit. It’s almost been 2 years since the launch of the original iPhone, why would they need to remove parts. Hardware gets smaller over time and all it really takes is a re-design(internally) with new, smaller parts.

5 - Less Storage - This article says the iPhone Nano wouldn’t be able to have the storage that the new iPhone models get.
This is the only part of the article I agree with. But that is only true if you want to one with a 16GB or 32GB SSD chip. Yes there are a lot of people with iPhones that think even 32GB isn’t enough. Then again, there are people that still have a 4GB iPhone and have yet to fill it up. I could even see a 2GB iPhone Nano(micro SD cards are pretty small).

6 - Worse Battery Life - This article says the iPhone Nano would have a smaller battery, hence a shorter battery life.
Even though this has the potential of being true, I think that a smaller device would be easier on the battery. Especially when it comes to a smaller screen. Personally I don’t have an issue with the battery life. I go days without having to recharge my device. Then again I’m not using it with wifi, bluetooth, 3g, and gps all the time.

7 - Cell Contract - This article says the iPhone Nano would still require a cell contract from AT&T.
This one makes me laugh the most. Personally I think they would have done better and left it at ‘6 Reasons Why an iPhone Nano is a Bad Idea’, and left this one out. I guess fluff is fluff though right? Of course the iPhone Nano would require a contract, but did that prevent you from buying the original iPhone(or iPhone 3G)? It didn’t prevent 10+ million other people from buying it(I don’t know the exact number of iPhones sold). If you don’t like a contract, jailbreak it and unlock it(that’s what I did).

Conclusion
Look, there will always been a market for small devices. Whether it’s people buying netbooks instead of laptops or people buying a PSP/NDS instead of a full console. Tiny is good, even when it comes down to losing some functionality. . .Apple and Steve Jobs have proven this with the MacBook Air. The bad part is that the smaller a device gets, the more it will cost(again, refer to the MacBook Air). I wouldn’t be surprised if an iPhone Nano would cost upwards of 400-600 dollars. And just like before, there will still be millions of people willing to buy it.

MobileFiles Pro iPhone app

MobileFiles Pro - released in the iPhone App Store this week by Quickoffice - lets you create and edit Excel 2003 files on the iPhone …

This will be a real sight for sore eyes for folks who work with Excel a lot.  MobileFiles Pro comes from an established name in the mobile software arena (Quickoffice also produces apps that allow users of Symbian-powered devices to work with Word / Excel / other Office files).

This new app lets you access, manage, and work with a large variety of file types.  Read on for more details and links …

Here are some of MobileFiles Pro’s key features, per the listing at Quickoffice’s site:

  • Access and transfer files between your desktop (Mac or PC) and your iPhone.
  • Remotely access your Apple MobileMe iDisk files and folders and the shared iDisk folders of friends and family
  • View most common file format types including images, media files, Microsoft Office, iWork, PDF and many others.
  • Manage your files just as you would on your desktop with an easy to use, enhanced file manager.
  • Control your content by creating folders to keep all your digital files organized.
  • Share any file on your iPhone with others by easily transferring files to or from any local desktop.
  • And now EDIT! native Microsoft Excel 2003 documents just as you would on your desktop. Save the edited Excel file on your iPhone, send to your iDisk account remotely, or upload to your desktop using WiFi - all while maintaining perfect data integrity.

That seems a strong list to me - especially the new Excel editing capabilities.  I haven’t given this app a try as yet, as I just don’t have to work with Excel / Office files very often anymore.  Would love to hear what any of you think of this if you give it a whirl, of course.

MobileFiles Pro is available now - for $9.99 - in the App Store, HERE

Snapture Labs Announces Camera Flash Unit For (jailbroken, 2G?) iPhone

December 23, 2008 by editor · Leave a Comment

Copyright © 2008 JoeT. Visit the original article at http://justanotheriphoneblog.com/wordpress/2008/12/23/snapture-labs-announces-camera-flash-unit-for-jailbroken-2g-iphone/.

SnaptureFlashLogo Snapture Labs has introduced the Snapture Flash, a camera flash unit for the iPhone.    Amongst its many features are a Xenon flash unit, which they claim is 100 times brighter than an ordinary LED-based flash.

The Snapture Flash also boasts over 1000 flashes on a single charge, along with a built-in low-light detection feature to automatically trigger the flash.  The unit is based on an enclosure case design - meaning that your iPhone slips into the case that holds the flash unit - making the Snapture Flash an attractive carrying case for your iPhone as well.   The case features speakerphone amplification, which is a great feature in its own right.

SnaptureFlashUnit

The bad news, however, is that the unit currently only works with jailbroken iPhones; likely because the flash is triggered by Snapture’s software - which isn’t available through the App Store.   One would imagine that there is some sort of official Apple restriction in accessing hardware connected through the docking port as well.   Adding to the potential woes is that there is no mention of compatibility with the iPhone 3G - indeed, the photo we were provided showed an original 2G iPhone.

Snapture did not announce a price for the Snapture Flash, and as they are currently seeking manufacturing partners, it seems that it will be some time before it is available for purchase.
